Neil Beauchamp Selby born 1915, Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire.
Father Alexander Prideaux Selby b1887, Mother Mary Thorpe b1886.
Neil Beauchamp Selby commissioned Friday 9th February 1940, seconded to 1st Royal Dragoons, later attached to 11 Commando 4th Troop, eventually recruited into Special Operations Executive Cairo.
Major Selby was Parachuted into Yugoslavia, there he was to help instigate Chetniks and Partisans into more action.
During late August 1943, Major Selby radioed Cairo SOE, he implied he could get more done by going further into German held territory, he suggested he could encourage the opposing rebel groups to partake in more sabotage agains the Germans. Selby along with his radio operator made contact with a Partisan group on Mount Jastrebac.
On the night 18/19 August 1943, Major Selby and his radio operator were captured near Zitkovac by Serbian Quisling Units, (an SOE Officer by the name of Robertson was apparently the only one to escape)
That same night 18/19 August sabotage incidents did take place against the Germans, the next day Thursday 19th August, the commander of Serbia ordered the reprisal killings of 30 people, the SOE activities were blamed for the reprisals.
It was felt that Major Selby had been betrayed, he was handed over to the Gestapo, his wireless operator was shot, Major Selby was take to Belgrade prison where he was interrogated and tortured by the Gestapo.
AT The prison Major Selby made an attempt to escape, during his attempt he killed two SS Guards, Major Selby was then shot dead in the Belgrade prison yard.
SOE had known double agents working for them, some sympathetic to the various political and religious causes in Yugoslavia, it is alleged that these agents were responsible for influencing the situation and political reports that would be eventually sent to the British Government.
Colonel William Bailey along with Captain William Deakin were SOE operators and political advisors to SOE regards the situation in Yugoslavia. The reports from SOE operators were forwarded by Bailey and Deakin to the British Government, the reports were influential in deciding which regime to support in Yougoslavia. Tito’s Partisans were felt to be more effective against the Axis troops.
Some of the SOE agents in the Cairo station had a political and ideological agenda to ensure that Yougoslavia came under communist rule, the reports these agents passed onto Cairo SOE may have been biased toward the communist regime.
Captain William Deakin was parachuted in to fight with Tito in 1943, during September that same year, a Brigadier Fitzroy Maclean was flown in as Liaison officer to General Draza Mihailovic leader of the Chetnik’s , it is alleged that Brigadier Fitzroy Maclean had been chosen due of his lack of political contacts or skills.
Early in 1943, the BBC radio broadcasts regards Yugoslavia were subtly supporting the Partisans (Tito) during December 1943 the foreign secretary Anthony Eden, announced the British were fully recognising Tito’s Partisans as an allied force.
During WW2 the Special Operation Executive had been training Yugoslavian guerrilla fighters in Canada.
